Tank Drying and containment systems require a reliable source of clean dry air under the right pressure. The air supply shall be sufficient to restore normal air pressure within a time specified by the competent authority (NFPA requires 30 minutes for dry pipework). Proper air conditioning should be provided for all dry and critical systems. If the pressure is too low, the dry valve may accidentally trip when subjected to increased water supply pressure. If the pressure is too high, the time between opening the sprin-kler and the flow of water the nozzle may not be acceptable. Very high pressure can also damage the dry valve. The air pressure design is specified by the dry valve manufacturer. The air supply can be provided by the factory air system, individual compressors with or without a reservoir, and compressed air (nitrogen or dry air) in the cylinder. When a plant's air system is manually operated and may be shut down on weekends or holidays, an automatic maintenance air compressor can be used to maintain the required robustness. A maintenance air compressor can be used as the main source on small dry systems. It is often desirable to provide a low air pressure alarm that is activated by an air pressure switch. The switch is placed below the lowest design air pressure and above the expected tripping point of the dry valve to provide time to take corrective action in the event of a low air pressure alarm.
