An Optical Beam Smoke Detector (Smoke Detector Beam) is a device that uses a projected beam of light to detect smoke over large areas, usually as a fire alarm indicator. They are used to detect fires in buildings where standard point smoke detectors would be uneconomical or restricted in use to the height of the building. Optical beam smoke detectors are often installed in warehouses as a cost-effective means of protecting large open spaces.

Working principle

Optical beam smoke detectors work on the principle of light occlusion, where the presence of smoke will partially block the light from the beam, usually through light absorption or scattering. When a certain percentage of the transmitted light is blocked by the smoke, a fire is signaled. Optical beam smoke detectors are commonly used to detect fires in large commercial and industrial buildings, as a component in larger fire alarm systems.

Structure

Optical beam smoke detectors consist of at least one light emitter and one photosensitive receiver. The photosensitive receiver monitors the light produced by the transmitter under normal conditions. In the absence of smoke, light travels from the light emitter to the receiver in a straight line. In a fire, when smoke falls into the path of the beam detector, part of the light is absorbed or scattered by the smoke particles. This produces a decrease in the received signal, resulting in an increase in optical occlusion i.e. light transmission through the beam path.

What are the limitations of beam smoke detectors?

Early examples of optical beam smoke detectors were prone to false alarms, caused by a variety of factors. Usually, the accumulation of dust, dirt and other debris will lower the detector's detection threshold, causing the system to initiate an alarm when there is no fire. Modern devices use automatic gain control as a means of modulating the signal for these effects. Building movement is another common problem, where the movement of the building causes the optical beam smoke detector to lose alignment. Motorized ray tracing partially solved this problem, but it can still be problematic in certain settings.

What you need when testing beam detectors (Beam smoke detector)

- How does a beam smoke detector work?

- Beam detector test card

- Check beam detector filter

Installation diagram of beam detector ( Beam smoke detector)

Cluster smoke detectors, which come with a transceiver and a receiver, have an advantage over on-site smoke detectors as you can mount them on the wall or below the level of the point detectors we install on ceiling. The ray detector also senses when smoke accumulates at a distance. The beam detector shines a beam of infrared light at the receiver, which activates if the beam path is smokey for more than 8 to 10 seconds. Optical ray detectors detect smoke over wide areas, making them ideal for shopping malls, museums, churches and airports.

- Steps to test a beam smoke detector (Beam smoke detector)

Step 1 Turn off the zone where the system will be down for inspection and maintenance. You will test the system at the receiver. Make sure the receiver shows a flashing green LED. If you don't see flashing or hear an alarm, it means the detector has lost power and the wiring needs to be checked.

Step 2 Use the correct side of the test card. Double-sided test cards simulate smoke conditions when running tests. Detector sensitivity settings let you know which side of the tag to use.

Step 3 Keep the ''No Alarm'' test filter section on the receiver lens. The alarm will not sound after 15 seconds and the green LED will continue to play. The test filter verifies the sensitivity setting of the beam smoke detector.

Step 4 Place the ''Alarm'' test filter section on the receiver lens. The alarm will sound for 15 seconds. If the detector does not alarm, check and correct the wiring, then retest the device. If the alarm does not sound after the second inspection, return the ray detector for repair. Step

5 Reset the plume smoke detector by pressing the reset button on some models behind the rear door of the receiver. You can also momentarily disconnect the power to reset the device.

Step 6

After the test is done, we can let the beam detector system shine  ( Beam smoke detector)working again

You will try Beam smoke detector works or not in any way?

According to our experience, when you have installed a fire alarm system that has a beam detector, the fastest way is to use a black nylon sheet to cover the distance between the detector and the mirror. . If the device sends an alarm to the Central Cabinet, it is successful. In addition, you use the glass plate as an accessory to try this device.. Wish you success!!!
