There are a number of non-governmental bodies that have significant influence on standards within the safety industry. They are the American National Standards Institute, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the National Fire Protection Association, the Safety Instrumentation Institute and Underwriters' Laboratories Inc. Factory Mutual (FM) Founded in 1835, Factory Mutual (FM) now has 17 regional offices across North America with loss control consultants. These consultants visit and analyze facilities, write inspection reports and sometimes return for surprise audits to ensure that all safety regulations are being followed.

- As part of third-party certification, FM visits the facilities where products are made to ensure FM specifications are met and continued evaluation is performed to ensure that quality of the product is maintained. FM Services also provides a 700-page guide listing approved products, materials and services, and a training facility to help others understand loss control.
