1.Before moving the extinguisher, check that the safety pin/clamp and seal are in place (Figure 1) and that the extinguisher has not been operated (if this is not the case, Make sure the fire extinguisher is secure before proceeding by installing the safety pin and tamper seal)

2.Check the fire extinguisher service label, if extended service is not due then continue.

3. Visually inspect the fire extinguisher body for external corrosion or damage that could affect the safe operation of the fire extinguisher, especially inspecting the end cap. If this is made from plastic, check for UV attenuation.

4.Ensure that the manufacturer's fire extinguisher label is in good condition, legible, and printed in English.

5.Weigh the extinguisher to ensure that it meets the weight listed on the service label (Inspection and refilling is required if weight loss exceeds 10%).

6.Verify the pressure gauge indication is in the green area of the gauge (Figure 2). Verify that the gauge is operating properly by performing a gauge test with a pump gauge tester or pin test. (This step does not apply to CO2 fire extinguishers)

7.Remove the discharge hose from the fire extinguisher end cap, inspect the hose and nozzle for damage and ensure that the hose is not clogged (Figure 3). Remove the tube 'O' ring and replace if applicable.

8.Break the seal by pulling out the safety pin/clip. In the case of a metal latch; Check that it is in good condition. Reinstall/replace the safety pin/clamp and then secure in place with a tamper seal.

9.Replace any 'O' rings that have had components removed.

10.Wipe the outside of the fire extinguisher with a cloth.

11.Fill in the necessary details on the service label (date, weight, engineer's initials and next service date).

12.If possible, ensure that the wall brackets are secure before putting the extinguisher back in place

13.If there is a mark above the fire extinguisher, check that it is suitable and in good condition

Fire extinguishers operate using a cartridge containing the extinguishing agent (water, foam, powder, CO2, etc.) in the master cylinder (it is not pressurized) and a separate gas cartridge containing highly pressurized CO2. When the handle is tightened, the pierced CO2 cartridge releases pressure into the master cylinder.

1.Before moving the fire extinguisher, check that the safety pin/clamp and seal are in the correct position and that the fire extinguisher has not been operated (if not, secure the extinguisher fire before going further by installing tamper seal safety pin).

6.Tighten the end cap assembly no more than one-third of the way required for complete removal - this allows any remaining pressure in the extinguisher to escape through the automatic means of venting. Then continue to open the fire extinguisher slowly.

7.Remove the fire extinguisher cap from the fire extinguisher body.

8.Check the end cap and operating mechanism for damage.

9.Check the air cartridge and if safe, remove the cartridge from the end cap. Visually inspect the gas cartridge for corrosion or damage - in either case, replace the cartridge according to the manufacturer's instructions.

10.Check that the gas canister is more than 10 years old - if not, replace it.

11.Check the weight of the gas box compared to the weight marked on the body of the gas box. Although a -10% tolerance is allowed (15% for cartridges with contents less than 30 grams), it is good practice to replace if the cartridge has lost weight.

12.Remove the safety pin/clamp and tamper seal from the end cover. Check free movement of safety pin/clip and replace if necessary. Check to ensure that the operating lever operates freely and is not damaged.

13.Check that the firing pin is in the correct position and operating correctly.

14.Check to ensure that the drain hose, faucet nozzle, dip tube and filter screen are free of obstructions and damage. Pass air through the exhaust pipe, dip pipe and filter, check for blockages and correct operation. 15.Check the pressure relief slots in the head cap threads - clean if necessary.

16.Attach the O-ring on the new head.

17.Install the new exhaust 'O' ring.

18.Assemble the end cap, discharge tube, dip tube, and gas canister together and set aside so that the extinguisher body and its contents can be handled.

19. Empty the contents of the fire extinguisher into a clean container. Environmentally test the fire extinguisher to ensure that it is suitable for reuse. If the medium is not suitable for reuse then discard accordingly. All vehicles must be kept clean and free of debris. The powder environment must be kept clean, dry and away from moisture.

20.Check the inside of the fire extinguisher body with a torch to check for corrosion and damage to the inner lining (powder fire extinguishers do not have a lining). 21.Return the original or new medium to the extinguisher - always following the manufacturer's specifications.

22.Reinstall the end cap and tighten it down.

23. Weigh the total weight of the fire extinguisher.

24.Wipe the outside of the fire extinguisher with a cloth. 25.Fill in the necessary details on the service label (date, weight, engineer initials and next service date).

26.If possible, ensure that the wall brackets are secure before placing the extinguisher back in place.

27.If the above signs are present, check whether the fire extinguisher is suitable and in good condition.
