Big fire in U Minh Ha forest

Mr. Nguyen Van Hau recounted: ''On the afternoon of June 9, a fire broke out because Mr. H burned the fields, cleared the grass, and planted fields. People around tried everything to put out the fire under the peat layer but failed, so they called the authorities for help.'' Khanh An commune authorities mobilized 3 units of hamlets, mobilized forces to extinguish the fire. Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh, Head of Hamlet 17 directly along with about 30 people tried to fight the fire. ''Yesterday, there was heavy rain here, but it didn't penetrate, the smoldering fire in the ground broke out again'' - Mr. Khanh said.
This is a temporary area for 52 households, each household is 1.5 ha to grow crops and afforest. U Minh people call this Xom Ray but mainly grow medicinal herbs. Mr. Chau Van Hai just held a hose and sprayed it on the burning peat layer, while sighing: ''Burn the peat layer is difficult to cure, the whole line of fish medicine until the harvest day is in danger of burning to ashes''.
On June 12, talking with reporter Tien Phong, Mr. Le Van Hai said: ''The Forest Protection Department, the Fire Prevention and Fighting Police have surveyed, but the peat layer fire fighting is very difficult, can only be localized, prevent the fire from spreading to a large area''.
