Conventional dry chemical powders are not suitable for metal fires. - KV - LITE CLASS-D is a metal salt based dry powder specially formulated for metal fires. It is treated with special chemicals to impart free flow and water repellency.
- KV-LITE Class-D fuse at temperature. above 600°C and has a high fusion potential. The powder melts by absorbing heat the burning metal. It then forms a strong layer on the metal surface and provides a covering effect. Oxygen supply and thermal radiation are thus cut off the burning metal surface. The anionic radicals of the powder react with the free radicals of the metal responsible for propagating the flame, which leads to a retardation of the flame propagation chain reaction.
- CLASS KV-LITE -D was found to be suitable for all class D fire and explosion risks including light metals like Li, Na, K, Mg etc. and their alloys. It can be used even for small oil fires.
Applications
- The dry powder should be distributed gently over the burning surface at low pressure with the help of a diffuser. High pressure can splatter burning metal and fire can start elsewhere.
- KV-LITE Class-D powder should be applied gently, either through a fire extinguisher or through an automatic powder dispensing system. The dry powder can also be manually applied over burning metal with the help of a spoon, shovel or plastic bag. Care should be taken to completely cover the surface without pinholes. Covered surfaces should be in place for at least 30 to 45 minutes.
